I'm Gabrielle Solíz. I make necklaces and earrings in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The studio carries my grandmother's name. Leonore Salinaz Solíz kept beads, fabric scraps, and found things, grouped without a pattern. She quilted and gardened. She called ordinary things beautiful and meant it. As a kid, I studied her collections. How colors sat beside each other. How a thing could hold your attention without explaining itself.

I still work that way. A piece starts with one material I can't stop looking at, and I build around it. Ancient quartz. Stegodon fossil. Old African glass. Petoskey stone. Vintage German acrylic. Red coral. River stone pulled from the lake. Fine silver, hand-formed and kiln-fired. Some of it comes from the Dabls Mbad African Bead Museum in Detroit. Some I've been holding onto for years.

Some pieces are spare. Some are raw and irregular. Nothing follows a formula.

Everything is made by hand in my studio. Most pieces exist once and can't be repeated, because the materials can't.

I photograph all of it myself.
